From Asia to Boston, each participating Asian musician has embarked on a profound journey that spans cultures and regions. This performance not only pays tribute to their musical contributions but also explores the complex emotional connections between women and their homeland through music performance, dance, interactive visuals, and real-time projections. As they look back on their homeland, nostalgia and longing are transformed into artistic expression, creating a path home that transcends time and space.
In 2024, this event is curated by saxophonist Ju-Chen Wang and directed by Lingyi Kong, using musical performance as the starting point to guide the audience on a journey of exploring future lands and the path home.
The Concept Statement
The design of Her Way Home uses a repetition strategy, much like a memorable piece of music. Every variation—whether high notes or low harmonies—serves the main theme, ensuring visual symbols adapt to different media while maintaining consistency.
The concept is inspired by the theme of a 'way,' symbolizing both a return to roots and a journey forward. This idea is dynamically expressed through movements of 'advance and retreat,' visualized using chord structures and creative coding. The visual rhythm aligns seamlessly with the performance's music and dance, creating a cohesive experience. To maintain a unified identity, the iconography style incorporates shrink-and-extrude forms, ensuring each element is distinctive, functional, and instantly recognizable. Unlike traditional concerts, this project integrates interactive new media, presenting a unique challenge for visual coherence across platforms.
To address this, Lingyi collaborated closely with musicians, focusing on differentiation details to ensure a clear, impactful experience for a diverse audience. As a performance bridging Asian culture and classical music, we created materials across platforms to enhance the audience experience, weaving design, visuals, music, and performance into a distinctive audiovisual journey.
